Mozart's "The Magic Flute"
(For cast list use Current Production link)
With “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the
Light Opera Company of Southern Maryland leaps backward to 1791,
the last year of Mozart’s life, to his final opera, which he
called a “musical” (a play with singing). This summer the
Light Opera Company will return to the theater in the St.
John Vianney Family Life Center in Prince Frederick, Maryland,
for two performances of “The Magic Flute” on July 31 at 7:00
p.m. and August 1 at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Shawn Storer will
conduct the performances, and Dr. Sandra Jarrett will produce
and direct. As always the production is fully staged and
costumed, and is performed with a chamber orchestra recruited
from local professionals.
“The Magic Flute” unfolds like a fairy tale, complete with a
wicked queen, a prince who falls in love with a beautiful young
woman, a flute that can cast a spell, and a series of trials
that the hero and heroine must endure before they are united at
last. Along the way we meet memorable comic and villainous
characters, a trio of spirits, evil serpents and enchanted
animals--all wrapped up in some of the most sublime music Mozart
ever wrote.
The
Light Opera Company gives preference to local emerging
professional opera soloists, and those who have sung with the
company in the past. For “The Magic Flute” the company has
singers returning from “The Mikado” and “Orpheus in the
Underworld”, as well as a number of new talents. The children
who will appear as animal characters are members of the Schubert
Singers from La Plata, Maryland.
